Classic Apple Crumble

Jump to Recipe

Lately, I have been shopping online for groceries and often find that I don’t often get the best fruits choices. Lately, the apples we got weren’t tasty and we ended up with lots of apples that no one was eating.  During the lockdown when everyone is facing food shortages, I could not bring myself to throw them out.  I could have made my chunky apple chutney or my carrot and apple raita  but  instead decided to make the classic apple crumble – like the one taught in my Cookery classes in school.

Ingredients:

  • 600 grams apples ( I used pink lady apples)
  • 2 tbls sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 175 gms plain flour
  • 2 tbls oats ( I used Ready brek oats)
  • 110 gms sugar
  • 110 gms butter (should be cold)
  • Any ice cream to serve with the crumble

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 190C/170 F/Gas mark 5.

2. Peel and core the apples and cut into small  cubes and transfer then to a  baking dish.

3. Transfer the plain flour, oats, sugar and salt to a food processor.  Add in slices of the cold butter and mix this in the food processor. the mixture should look nice and grainy.

4.Add the grainy mix on top of the apples and press it down using a fork.

5.Lower the oven temperature by 20 degrees and cook for 30 -35 minutes.  The top should be golden and the apples should have softened. Allow the crumble to cool for 10-15 minutes.

6. Serve the crumble hot with custard, cream or like me with ice cream

Sometimes it’s  nice to serve apple crumble as dessert.
