My husband has been fasting the whole of the Shrawan month and I am trying my best to make different farar/falhar dishes for him. Today I made this dry sweet potato khichedi which my MIL used to make a lot. There are certain foods we are allowed to eat during the Hindu fasts. I only know which foods are allowed from remembering what my parents cooked on such occasions. Occasionally, I see recipes for Farari dishes of foods I would never eat but that’s fine as everyone has their own traditions to follow. I know that potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruit, milk and nuts were allowed so I made this easy peasy stir fry sweet potato dish, with some nuts, which can be eaten on its own.

Ingredients
2 medium sweet potatoes ( I used the orange flesh ones)
2 tbls oil (you can use ghee too)
1 tsp cumin seeds
3-4 curry leaves
2-3 hot green chilies
salt and pepper to taste (rock salt is preferable)
2 tbls desiccated coconut
handful of peanuts and cashews
1 tbls lemon juice
small bunch of coriander
Instructions
Wash and grate the sweet potatoes, chop the chilies into small chunks and grate the ginger.
Heat the oil and add the cumin seeds and curry leaves. As soon as the cumin browns, add the nuts so they too brown lightly.
Add the sweet potatoes, ginger and chilies and stir. Cover and allow the sweet potatoes to soften for 5 minutes. Next add the desiccated coconut and stir. The sweet potatoes cook very quickly so just add lemon juice and garnish with coriander and serve.
