Spicy Strawberry Chutney

This summer, there seems to be a glut of strawberries as the local farm shop gave me a huge bag full of ripe strawberries. And summer strawberries UK  taste the best.

Strawberry: This fruit conjures up the idea of strawberry and cream served at Wimbledon and even schools Sports days.  The colour and scent of the fruit is so tempting that one feels like eating the strawberry as soon as it’s ripe.  Have you tried dipping fresh and ripe strawberries in sugar or chocolate?  It’s addictive.  At one restaurant, we were served fresh strawberries in a tamarind sauce which looked similar to Balsamic vinegar.  I expected it to be sour but it was pleasantly sweet and tasty.

I used some strawberries to make  jam fresh strawberry juice and then this strawberry chutney.  Chutney using strawberries does sound odd but  it turned out just perfect to have as a dip with pakoras and samosas.

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs fresh strawberries
  • 2 green chilies
  • 1 cup sugar
  • juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 tsp mixture of ground cloves and cinnamon
  • 2 tbls chili flakes (as per your taste)
  • 3-4 cardamom pods

Method

1. Wash and chop the strawberries. Transfer them to a large saucepan and add in all the ingredients . Mash the strawberries with a potato masher.

2. Heat this mixture on a low heat. Keep stirring and checking until the chili jam mixture starts to thicken similar to when you make jam.   You may get some scum whilst the strawberries are cooking. Use a spoon to remove as much of the sum as you can.

3.  Once the mixture feels nice and thick like jam, remove from heat.  Transfer the mixture into sterilised bottles and use as condiment with any dish.
