Our Veganuary Journey Day 2

How is your second day of veganuary going?  If you have joined  Veganuary  – their website has lots of tips on how to make small lifestyle changes to follow a vegan diet.  They also email you with helpful information and vegan meal plans.

Recipes on my blog too can be easily converted to vegan by substituting the dairy products.  In fact that’s exactly what we have been doing.  As a family, meal planning has been fine so far as we are all vegetarian and  we are substituting all the  dairy products eg. we have substituted regular milk for soya, oats and almond milk   Some of the family liked soya milk on their cereal whilst others preferred oat milk.  We have tried out some vegan cheese too and I will be sharing my views on them at a future Post.  It’s all about making small changes and trying out alternatives. In this post, I talk about the vegetarian products which are also vegan.

Yesterday,  whilst shopping  – I was disappointed that big coffee shops like Starbucks were not prepared for Veganuary.  At lunchtime, I  went to Starbucks for coffee and a sandwich. I had one of their vegan wraps with a vegan caramel macchiato.  I was disappointed that after queuing for 30 minutes (in fact 35 minutes as I timed it) – the only choice of vegan sandwiches was  a vegan wrap and they had no vegan muffins or cookies. The vegan wrap I had was cold and soggy and  my caramel macchiato too was cold!!  In future, I will not be going to Starbucks for two reasons – one is the limited choice for vegetarians and vegans and secondly for their one and only dirty toilet – yes you read that right!! They had just one badly maintained loo for ladies, gents, babies and the disabled – Yuk! .  Time to try out other coffee shops I think.

For dinner, we made  some healthy wild rice  (recipe to follow) with lots of nuts and mixed vegetables with our favourite spinach and potato curry  with avacodo parathas  and for a treat we tried out Ben and Jerry’s vegan Icecream which tasted as good as any ice cream.

As mentioned before – changing to a vegan diet hasn’t meant a huge life change for us as we are already vegetarian. My advice to anyone who is attempting to become vegan is to take each day at a time and see how you  manage the change – that’s what we are doing.  Do keep following our journey and see if we manage to go through for the whole month.

If you are attempting veganuary – do share your tips and experience on what changes you have had to make for this lifestyle change.

Don’t give up as yet!!
