Homemade Hummus

A month ago UK suffered a Hummus crisis  as some of the major supermarkets had to remove hummus from their shelves due to a “production issue”.  It seemed that the hummus they sold  had a metallic taste to it.  Apparently, in UK,  we eat 12,000 tonnes of hummus  a year and the shortage had sent social media to a meltdown.  We found the news amusing and my son decided that he would make some hummus as it was so easy to make with whatever ingredients you have in the cupboard.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can chickpeas (drained weight 240 gms)
  • 150 gms tahini (readymade)
  • 2 tbls lemon juice
  • salt to taste – we used Jane’s Krazy mixed -up seasoning (use for reference only -Ignore the price)
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic
  • 3-4 tsps olive oil

Method

  1. Drain the water from the chick peas and wash the chickpeas with cold water.   Save  5-6 chick peas for garnishing and transfer the rest to a blender.
  2. Peel the garlic, and blend them using a garlic press and add them to the chick peas in the blender.
  3. Add the seasoning, chili powder, lemon juice, tahini and blend until it looks like a nice paste. Add water if you think that your hummus is looking too thick. Add 2 tsps of olive oil and blend again.
  4. 4.  Remove the hummus to a serving dish and garnish it with some chick peas, some chili powder and olive oil.   And we have been saved from the hummus crisis!!

To make it interesting, you can add variations such as avocados, peppers, green chilies, Mediterranean vegetables etc. to the hummus mixture
