During my visit to the Epcot Centre in Florida, we visited their Living with the Land pavilion where they take you on a boat to show you how they grow vegetables, using the hydroponic method. These vegetables are then used in their restaurants. Hydroponics is a method of growing plants using just water and nutrients, and Disney uses this technology throughout their greenhouses. growing food hydroponically is so much different from my visit to the chili farm in UK. or my visit to the Green bean farm in Kenya
So when I found out that Crate to Plate is a London-based urban farming business which harnesses state-of-the-art hydroponic technology and eco-friendly innovation – to grow the freshest possible produce ‘made in London’, delivered straight to your door, I felt that I should share this information on my vegetarian and vegan blog. Crate to Plate bring sustainable, local production of leafy greens to urban communities,
You can now buy Crate to Plate’s fresh leafy greens (including lettuce, rocket, kale, herbs, and more) by visiting shop.cratetoplate.farm. All the produce is harvested shortly before being delivered straight to your door. Their boxes contain a variety of the highest quality, locally grown and freshly picked produce, all from their first urban farm in London’s Canary Wharf. There are a number of ‘farm-to-table’ boxes to choose from, filled with a selection of fresh leafy greens and herbs that varies each week according to what is ready for harvest. This ensures that your box will always contain the freshest possible greens. Their boxes range from £6 to £28 depending on the selection and quantity, with no delivery charge on orders of £15 or more.
Hydroponic vertical farming has proven to have essential advantages over traditional farming methods, allowing Crate to Plate to grow locally in urban environments. This approach uses minimal water (95% less than farming with soil), with little space required. As a result, the produce is super fresh, with consistent quality, and has the highest possible nutrient value – always completely free of pesticides and toxic chemicals, and with zero carbon footprint in transporting from farm to customer.
Crate to Plate is bringing this beneficial technology and ethos to new urban markets, contributing to a more sustainable future with higher food security. At the moment they are only able to delivery in Zones 1 – 3 in London, but in the next 6 months they will be setting up new farms in other parts of London and the UK. Crate to Plate is also able to delivery to restaurants and offices across the city.
The pandemic are certainly made us all think differently and become innovative and this looks like one of those ventures. In crowded cities like London this could become the future of food production – where you are able to get freshly picked herbs and greens delivered to your home or restaurant. Do check out their website for more information.
The greens and herbs sold by Crate to Plate would be perfect to use in my Crispy salad recipe.
