Spicy Strawberry Chutney

Last week I had plenty of strawberries given to me by the local farm.  I made some jam and also made some strawberry chutney.   The idea of the jam came from a recipe posted in eCurry’s blog (http://www.ecurry.com/blog/).  I didn’t have some of the spices mentioned in the recipe so I improvised with the spices I had.

  • 2 lbs fresh strawberries
  • 2 green chillies
  • 1 cup sugar
  • juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 tbls mixture of ground cloves and cinnamon
  • 2 tbls chili flakes
  • 3-4 cardomon pods

1. Wash and chop the strawberries. Transfer them to a large saucepan and add in all the ingredients . Mash the strawberries with a potato masher.

2. Heat this mixture on a low heat. Keep stirring and checking until the chilli jam mixture starts to thicken. like making jam. you may get some scum whilst the strawberries are cooking. Use a spoon to remove as much of the sum as you can.  I didn’t add do any tadka (tempering) as I did not want to add any oil to the chutney.

3.  Once the mixture feels nice and thick like jam, remove from heat.  Transfer the mixture into sterilised bottles and use as condiment with any dish.

I am entering this into the Rix Recipe competition for June where the theme is strawberries.

    • It can be stored for a long time if the bottle has been sterilised and sealed well. However, once you open the bottle, store it in the fridge and eat it within a week.
